Designing a new exhibition and performance space in a 12th century historic building

The Marlowe Kit

Immersive exhibition space

Following on from their work at New Inn Broadway honoring the legacy of shakespeare on site, Gallus, in collaboration with theatre set designer Jo Parker delivered the concept design for a new exhibition and performance space in the old town museum in Canterbury.

The museum was granted lottery funding, to be used by creatives and curators linked to The Marlowe Theatre and museums in Canterbury given the brief to honour three of ‘Kents Remarkable Writers’, Christopher Marlowe, Joseph Conrad and Aphra Behn with a new and immersive exhibition space, set within the 12th century building.

Deriving much of the inspiration from the museum and theatre team, Gallus used simple cost effective techniques such as the use of colour and soundscapes coupled with theatrical curtaining devices to disguise and reveal images and objects to tell their stories.

A design aesthetic coloured by history

Use of colour families and theatrical devices such as curtains and lighting to define specific areas of the exhibition that would deliver the theatrical and literary narrative. A flexible setting in which curators can continue to develop further concepts for the display of physical, digital or sound installations.
